fallopian tubes: Long, slender tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus. An egg released from the ovaries must travel through these tubes to reach the uterus.
fetus: Eight weeks after conception and until delivery, an unborn baby is called a fetus.
follicle: A fluid-filled sac in the ovary in which the egg develops prior to being released during ovulation.
hormone: A chemical substance that is made in one part of the body but that has an effect on another part of the body. Hormones typically travel in the bloodstream and regulate anything from appetite to sex drive to mood.
hypothalamus: A part of the brain that is vital in regulating many body functions, including the production of sex hormones.
hysterectomy: Surgery to remove the uterus and, sometimes, the cervix.
